Summary

In the series premiere of Under the HUD, Thaddeus and Dann discuss their top choices from the Summer Games Fest 2024. After dusting off the ashes from their fallen previous podcast, they catch up on old times and then get right to business comparing amongst other things, their most noteworthy games from this year's Summer Games Fest. From there, they discuss a few honourable mentions, and cap it all off by discussing a game they were truly baffled by, along with what they really think its lead character looks like. Hello, and welcome to Under the HUD! I'm Thaddeus. And I'm Dan. And this is episode one. On today's episode, we're going to be discussing the latest Summer Games Fest. We're not going to go over the whole thing because they were epic events that had many games contained in them. So we're just going to talk about our top choices, the ones we found most notable and maybe our overall impressions. So, Dan, how have you been? I've been alright. I mean, we just played a little bit of Elden Ring to get back into it. The DLCs. A little pregame. Yeah, a little pre -gaming, you know. Now I got the big dick swing of energy from playing Alder Ring. Yeah, I defeated the, I guess, most notorious boss, Melania. Yeah. And we did it, like, what, within an hour? Yeah, yeah. That sounds pretty good. Yeah. Pretty good. Not too bad. I mean, I have a couple, you know, troubles at the beginning and then just kind of developing a flow. It's because we tried to be super cheap. Yeah, like you know what we're just gonna fight her for real Because like over thought the cheesing methods well cuz you guys are magic users So it made sense for you to be magic user, but I was like I'm gonna go in and use magic to my guy is not built for that Now my guy is built to just run it and jump in the tack. Yeah, the cheap, you know, I'm on that cheap bleed mode Yeah, it was a beautiful thing that last one I was like I didn't want to jinx it but that last one we're gonna go and I was just just spamming her with my Death ranker attacks and you were yes, that's attacking. I was looking at that bar just the chunks of bleed coming out like Yeah, this is poetry emotion, but I didn't want to say anything cuz usually when I say things are going well these fights That's what they turn around. That's what it turns on us Yeah, that was good. I got like I'll I'll hyped up and got the juices flowing. yeah Yeah, it was good. It was good. I'm looking forward to the DLC coming out in about a week Yeah, and you know, it's only right that the hiatus started the drop of the fall off started with Elden Ring. Mean that might not have been our last show, but that was where that was where it's a good good this team started Popping out of the seams. Yeah Come come full circle over two years later or Hopefully getting back into the flow thing. So we're getting the band back together again Yeah, get pal Pally back here soon, too. And I mean well rumor has it Something he sort of was predicting way back might be happening. I mean, it didn't happen in the showcase, but you know, the portable Xbox. Who knows, there might be more shirts being made. Yeah. Get the shirts to the printing press. For what it's worth, the conditions are a little different because this is four years later or maybe in five years by the time it's out. And so prices would be different. Would we say in perpetuity? I Mean it also I mean I want my part of the bet just to be Clair the little update I want part of that and I got a burrito out of it Not the 50 bucks in the burrito something. I just want the I just want the admission, you know, no one has yet said yeah game pass is not great for game studio. Yeah We weren't recording during the fucking the black Monday or whatever the fuck What happened to Tango games Yeah, it turns out they're losing a lot of money Yeah, and pressuring studios to do things they don't want and then shattering those students when they don't win They fail. Yeah, because game pass eats their fucking game sales So they don't make money that way and people are stopping people are not signing up for game passing work because they realize I could just pay for one month. I could just pay for one month instead of the whole year. I don't have to say subscribe to this thing. You know what? You want a game password? You only sell it in yearly shits. Yeah, clearly. You get the month that you want something interesting and you sell it to them in three month chunks. You don't get the one month pass. You make the one month pass like $15 a month. That was a rookie mistake right there. Or like $20, but you make it so fucking egregious. I might as well buy three months at least. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, PlayStation does with Plus, you got to go for the year, right? You got to go for you got to you got to do like I do. Let your fucking PS plus expire. Wait those two two months or whatever just to get to the fucking days of play. And then every time you were new during days of play, you may have to wait a week, but it lines up. Because then you get that 20 % off and you want to be extra cheap you do what I do You go to Costco you buy your PS Plus cards cuz you get paid $90 you get $100 worth of PS plus I even know about this hack. yeah That's how you buy your digital games and your days of play shit Why cuz I'm that to save ten bucks You know, you save 20 % off with days of play. You save another $10 with the Costco PS, PSN cards, and you're good to you save 30 bucks right there. It adds up, man. Yeah. You know, you know what that's worth? That's like Katie's too, which I don't hear anyone's talking about, which is nobody talked about it. It's a good game. Yeah. No one said shit. Is it actually out? I know it had early access. It's an early access. Yeah, that's why. I mean, Haiti's the same thing. Wait, I thought it was really. I mean, the first one is early access for a while and no one really started giving a shit until it actually came out. Yeah, it released on the 6th of May. it was released, actually, full game. yeah, that's sad. I didn't hear any. I knew of the early access, I didn't realize the whole thing was out. So yeah, that's... I'm pretty sure. Let me check on PSN. Store. I don't know. It's all early access. Yeah, I couldn't see it coming with such a little fanfare. All right, so what have you been playing? Well, I mean, like I said, we just played Elden Ring, getting ready for that DLC. Yeah. I played a little bit of Yakuza Like a Dragon Infinite Well. And I told you this already, it's just not hitting the same. You know, so I thought it was a rough story is it's not the game itself is just no, it's just a long story though. Yeah, like it's I really will just want to be in it. I finally got my two boys with me, but it's just I kind of miss my first game and all the stuff I had. Yeah, I know the feeling now my guy is broke and like, yeah, he regressed in level and shit. Yeah, more games need to do the transfer your save over. The combat's a little bit better. Yeah, OK. Because before it was literally just point and click, and that's where you run it. If you happen to run by an item, you can grab it. This one, it's like you can kind of position yourself in a little box, and you can go towards an item to pick it up. So that's interesting. I was like, OK, that's a nice little feature. And he gets the bat. back his the hero's bat so like the first part you just see regular people that you're beating the shit out of but once you get the hero's bat that's when like he gets the hallucinations again and no one and they're just like he's hallucinating again and no one's all that concerned they're like yeah use the hallucinations bro it's not even like you know you picture like a fat like because there's like fat guys and stuff He's not like he's pictured a fat guy and then the fat guy is armored. He's pictured like a tiny dude and then he turns into like a giant. And then he's like a homeless person turns into like a robot. Like, okay, so this is what's happening to him. Clearly he's fucked up. So it's, I'm gonna assume it's just the jail time PTSD. Yeah. It's all that shower dick you got. Hide the salami? Yep. No ditty. Might be a salami pretty soon, who knows? Can't stop won't stop. You ain't going nowhere. I love the tone, it's like you're in prison. And I tried playing I downloaded grounded on PlayStation because fuck it, okay Why the fuck not? I'm already a slave to that fucking game Sure And it just doesn't hit the same as it does on PC Yeah, it works better on PC yeah with Disco Elysium some things just seem like they're more kind of such set for PC. I think the thing is that if I'm on my PlayStation, there are better games to play than grounded. Yeah. I think I figured it out. Yeah, because I mean, yeah, because like even something like a Baldur's Gate is generally a game. I guess experience is more... on PlayStation though. Yeah, it's more catered to PC, but then I got on PlayStation and I did fine. Like I was really immersed in it. Like I told you, way back I got it on PC first and I played for like an hour and I was like... This is good, but I think it'll be better to play on a console. Yeah. It worked out for me. Yeah, no, I liked it on PS5 as much as that makes us assholes for saying it. Yeah. I know it's crazy talk in many circles. Yeah, it's disgusting. Yeah. What about you? What have you been up to? What's this? Okay. Yeah. So yeah, I mean, I mean, outside of Elden Ring, only other game I really played was Thaumaturge. It's a, it's a PC RPG. I think it's coming to PlayStation eventually. And we'll see if I get the console version eventually, but it's, it's this RPG set in this dystopian version of Poland. And you're essentially like what's called a miracle worker sort of. And you're, I mean, I haven't gotten too far in it, but it's, it's, is it an RPG? Yeah. Yeah. It's an isometric RPG. So it's kind of, I got it because of mining a disco Elysium, but then it has more, more things going for it. And then actually I was surprised that actually has real common disco Elysium from as far as you can see, didn't have real combat. This one has like turn -based combat and everything in it. So it's, it's actually, it's actually a pretty cool concept from what I've seen. I'm not too deep into it, but what I've seen, I like, yeah. The only thing I will say I'd not. in love with is like the character animation they're a little waxy when they talk so that's gonna be yeah that's kind of you can tell the budget I mean it's not the biggest budget game and the voice acting isn't top -notch but it's to the point where I switched it from English to Polish so it's been playing in Polish with English subtitles yeah I do that with a lot of Japanese games just yeah yeah definitely even it's a called Stellar Blade, I switched from English to Korean. I was really put off by the English voices for that game. Yeah, I mean, it helps where there's a lot of corny dialogue because it just sounds better when you read it through subtitles. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, it's a good game. Not super far in it, but I like the aesthetics. I like the... I like the world building and I like, I'm actually surprised by the combat that it has. I mean, it wasn't, I didn't get too far. It wasn't, it wasn't deep. It wasn't like Octopath or anything with like a deep term base system from what I've seen. And I like, I guess where it seems to be going in terms of like using your, your characters, Thaumaturge powers for, for investigation and things like that. So, as I play, I'll get back to you. More on it, but yeah, that's where I stand. And then again, I've been playing Elden Ring in preparation for the upcoming DLC. I got far and then I guess kind of dropped off. And so now I'm trying to clean up and finish off the main campaign before the DLC comes out. And yeah, as you know, we were talking about, we just teamed up to beat Malenia. And I think I'm near the end. I think I pretty much... Only have like a few based on the god I'm following him because like I want the last steps though should be good a game still holds up I Mean part of these still I mean playing it kind of still I miss lives a P I mean, then there's still kind of like crossed wires Because some some of the some things play differently and I think some buttons are a little different differently laid out So you're sometimes I'll be pressing the one thing to do that. I know it's a little different in this though But overall, yeah, I mean elder ring can't say anything bad about it Other than some cheap ass boss fights maybe. And I mean, I'll say also, I hate the platforming in these games. Like some of the scenes where like the part where you're like walking on the tree branches. yeah. Yeah, it's just nightmarish. I mean, it's not designed for platforming, but you get through them. Yeah. Yeah, that's it really. Not too many. That's... Part of the difficulty that they put in there is they purposely put one part where for one of the endings they make you purposely drop down. Yeah. It's like, you want to do this thing, eh? Well, at least they're kind enough to put a sign of grace at the bottom. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And again, it wasn't the worst. I mean, I got through. It was like a couple. The platform in part with the trees was good. Couple deaths and then they got through it. It's just annoying because they also have that and you have like bugs shooting at you. Yeah, that's really not the most exciting list. We had a bigger list last time and that recording kind of... Yeah....some recording errors with the platform. I mean, it's very on brand. Yeah. For us to have recording issues. Yeah. And record an episode two years later. People don't know this. The first five episodes never aired. yeah, it was probably more than that. We recorded for two years. yeah, yeah. We recorded, it was 2017 until like, end of 2018. I think we recorded our first episode that like made it to air was like the end of 2018 and then we launched in 2019. Yeah. We had a good year. Yeah. We had a good year. But 2019 was definitely our best year. Yeah. We were just... We were like fucking machines. Yeah, it was like you come by after work and everything. You have the basement set up. It was good times, good times. Yeah. Now we live in two different cities. yeah, different cities and yeah, it's streaming. Yep, yep. Hectic lies. yeah. All these hoes. I decided to get married and knock up my wife. Yeah. But I honestly was like, you promised that nothing's gonna change once we have a baby, right? The oldest lie of the book. I'm gonna still be able to do whatever I want, right? No baby's gonna change me. Fuck you, baby. Like his fucking whipping slave. Speaking of which, legit question. OK. Do you do anything for two teeth? no. I mean, that's I mean, I don't even know when this came about, to be honest. It feels like something that was created in 2017. Yeah. I guess all of a sudden, I started seeing that. And it's like, I don't know. It's not my thing. And it's. Get some edibles or something? Yeah. No, I mean. I mean. Well, I because I know so many people like, yeah, you did. You you not do anything. I'm like, I'm not black. I mean, we're not American to not American either. It's an American, sick American holiday. It's not. Yeah. I mean, as much as I mean, I honor and I obviously celebrate the liberation emancipation. But I mean. It's not exactly tied to my direct history. Well, because you're Jamaican, right? And Nigerian. And Nigerian, yeah. So it's not tied to yours. Yeah, it's not exactly my. Not that it means anything. There's still black people. They're still like, it's my people. But it's not really tied to my history, personally. What do you mean, you people? I mean, I even know when it came. It's kind of came out of nowhere. It feels like a recent thing. It feels like maybe it wasn't talked about. Yeah, it wasn't something like people were celebrating like when we were in school and all that. Yeah. It's not like stuff that I do in school like jumping over the broom. I'm like, OK, I knew what the fuck that was. Yeah. Like these little things. Yeah. You know, like watching roots. Yeah. No, Kikute. The realist. By the way, I mean, it was just... We didn't really Talked about the whole idea of like if something's popular it gets a porn parody That's when you know you made it that you get a porn parody. I don't know if we - Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. Actually, I haven't looked so. Yeah, I'm sure. Do I really want to see Melania's dirty, rot hand? I mean, she's already pretty naked in the game, so I'm pretty sure it's not too far of a stretch. She's got the rot hand. Yeah. Yeah, I guess, can't get any worse from there. So I guess I might as well just go to the main topic. So the summer games festival was on Friday the seventh. And it ran throughout the weekend at different events. I guess the main event was, it was Friday and this is kind of just, it's essentially the game award show with less, commercialism, I guess, but then it's. They don't have the awards. They don't have to retain this for anything else, partially. And also, I guess, less celebrities. And it's just all as in the kind of get Jeff Keighley stepping in every so often to say what's coming up and kind of half-heartedly announcing, like, well, that was exciting or whatever. He's so milquetoes. Yeah. I mean, I hear he's a nice guy. Yeah. Yeah. But also. I don't know, if he put on a hoodie I would never go up to him. Fair. Okay. You know, unless he's wearing a suit, that's the only way I know who he is. Yeah. I mean, what do you think of the event overall though? Xbox came out strong. I will say that I enjoyed theirs. Did I like your voice of the state of play? Hmm I mean, I am an Xbox hater, so I will say I did enjoy State of Play more. OK. But I think I can accept that there were more bangers in the Xbox. Yeah. I will accept that. Because I'll say, yeah, for sure. For sure. That's where I stand, pretty much, yeah. It didn't capture me like the State of Play did. But there were definitely some bangers in there. But unfortunately, most of the things that I was like, yeah, that's good. Yeah. Were third party things. Yeah. So, you know. Yeah. Yeah. It was pretty good. And I can lie, it was good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, again, with it being over the overall feeling of like all the events is that with there being so many like so many things being pumped out a lot of things was kind of just went by me and I might as well absorb but there's I mean, I guess we're trying to have something for everyone. And if that's the goal and mission accomplished, yeah, they had a lot of games that were like the games of service type games, I guess, couldn't care less about but yeah, there are a lot of more traditional, just like third person, single player games up. I saw it and I was like, okay, yeah, I mean, I'm definitely, definitely interested. So, successful. Yeah, I remember that. Jesus Christ. That was like 10 years ago, wasn't it? It's still here. So, all right. And yeah, so I guess we decided that we're, instead of going through every single game, we're going to just pick our. most notable. So we're going to do our like top five, let's a few honorable mentions and we're going to do, some games that I guess made us both say like, what the fuck. And then we're going to have just the games that are kind of indifferent about like games that seemed like they're popular to a lot of other people, but we just didn't give interest. Actually, I kind of, I think it'd be more interesting to end with the what the fuck games. So we'll, we'll start with our, with our top fives and then, go to the. Was very yeah, the the ones that were like, okay, they're cool. Not hype. Yep. And then the last are like, what the fuck did this come from? Yeah. So you want to start first? Sure. I'll start with my bottom one. Okay. It would be Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Nice choice. Apparently there is a painter out there who paints a number. And everyone who's that age dies. Yeah. And it's an RPG, although it looks very Western. Yes. At first, I was like, I don't know. And then I thought about it. I was like, if this was anime, I'd be into it. Like if this was persona, if they said, this is persona and there's a painter out in the fucking magical wilds, paints your paint someone's age and they die. Okay, yeah, I'd be I'd be high for it. Yeah, I mean, okay little too close to death. No, if you're a anime it is yeah, but I'm like, okay, it's just the aesthetics I'm not a hundred percent because I don't love the Sort of Western look of it. Mm -hmm, but I can understand it It's not that it looks bad it looks yeah, yeah, yeah, that was also like this third person comment doesn't feel right here I mean, to me, I kind of almost like that it is because I mean, it feels like a more unique mixture because, I mean, you kind of know if you kind of used to certain aesthetics being paired with certain kind of gameplay. So, I mean, it's not a Final Fantasy. Yeah. So kind of seeing the art style paired with more Japanese style gameplay mechanics is actually a little refreshing, to be entirely honest. Yeah. It's a turn -based RPG. Yeah, yeah, so I mean... Did this make you list it all? It did, it did, yeah. So, I mean... It'll pop up. okay, actually, we'll get to it. It'll pop up, but yeah, it's definitely something. So this one I don't think we need to watch a trailer for, because we bought it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm watching again in the background. It says like a... kind of like a refresher, but yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think it looks great to be in turn -based. I think it's... Even with the Western style, it seems imaginative and it's not photorealistic. It has its own sort of, I guess, not like Bioshock, but you know how Bioshock is, the people were, it's based in realism, but also everyone has a sort of almost cartoony proportions. This is kind of there, but still a bit more rooted in reality. Yeah, it has a little bit of a... The Order 1886 sort of thing. Yeah, it makes it that too. I can see Order 1886. Like very stylized. Yeah. That and a bit of the French one again. Plague Tale, Requiem. yeah. A little bit of that. Yeah, like it's stylized. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. It's just without my anime waifus. How can I be dialed in? I mean, there's something in there that could... Fix that need for you. I'd say press f to hold hands By the way, did you play sorry you played did you get farting it? Eternites. Yeah I got about what? I beat the first two dungeons. Okay, and then the second dungeon they had this thing where it's like invisible tiles and I was like, you know what? I didn't know that was all made by one dude. I don't either. Yeah, it is. Yeah So I'm like, okay props. There's actually decent game. Yeah, it's definitely like the combat is a step down from what the hell is that one? What was the one where you use psychic powers to attack things? It's like a power to attack what? It's like a Japanese. I know what you're talking about. It's like the 20 other you can pick the guy or the girl, right? Yeah Scarlet Nexus Yeah, I just have to wait for Westeen to stop updating. because I use it so often. What's your number five? Okay. My number five is Wander Stop. wow. And it's by the creator of Stanley Parable. And it's like a, I guess it gives the impression that it's supposed to be one of those cozy games like Stardew Valley. Like you're in this really colorful candy colored world. Just like you're like helping people out and you're brewing tea and you're making the best tea in the world. But then... As the trailer nears the end, the character starts to seem like violent flashes and she's trying to run away from a violent past. So I know, I don't know too much about it. I know they're probably going to have a bit of the cozy gameplay stuff in it, which is whatever, but I feel like it's leading to other darker elements and things that sort of, I guess, subvert the genre. I like that because again, Stanley Parable is all about just like... like clever twists and head games and sort of, as, as, Roundhead Rian, famously put it, subverting expectations, right? So I'm curious to see where this one is going to go. I kind of want to go in blind and see, the strange places that this may go. So it means five, but it's like, who knows me if it, if it is, if it's just what it looks like, if it's just like the first parts of the trailer, then maybe, maybe we didn't make it to the list, but because I'm expecting some sort of. Like crazy mind fuck twist. That's why it's there It has potential. Yes, exactly. So you think it's gonna unicorn island your ass. Yeah, exactly Yeah, one of those kind of games again Stanley parable or whatever else. So yeah, I'm curious about it and Yeah, that's me. Why not stop with my number five? Nice nice. Yeah. All right number four Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Rita's rewind. Okay. I mean, this is interesting because before I was mentioning it. I was tempted not to put it in there. I was tempted to put something different. Yeah. But I was like, I may not play Wu -Chi fallen feathers. Okay. I'm like, but I will definitely be playing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Okay. Just because of our friend group. I already know him. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, right. So I was like, yeah, I did like, you know, the shredders are bad. Yeah, you know, I'm speaking of which This motherfucker, River City girls art book, it's amazing. I fucking love it. Where'd you get that? What was that like fan place that I ordered your shirt from fan gamer or something that and gamer. Yeah, okay, they've popped up Because it has the art book for River City girls One two and zero and you know how much I fucking love ever see girl. yeah. yeah You know if I could draw this good, I would steal their shit. Yeah Cuz I just think that the characters are so cool. Yeah, yeah, I'm curious. So, you know, I love me a good beat him up yeah, I still need to get through to actually sometime. I Haven't beaten two either. Yeah, I remember it was like really slow. I don't know if it was the Game or what but it was like really laggy. Yeah, it was the multiplayer was like yeah, you can try it again. I mean if not, you can try to improve the netcode Yeah, I mean again if it's not working on console we have the PC version to you and see if that's any better Yeah, or we could just do the share play. Yeah. yeah. Yeah, it's old Take over your one of the controllers. Yeah Yeah, so I decided to put it mighty more from Power Rangers in there, okay, I don't know I'm still torn between that and Wu Chang Fallen Feathers, although Wu Chang Fallen Feathers is like, I don't have enough information on it. Mm -hmm. Okay. But yeah. Yeah. What is your number four? Okay, well, I mean, yeah, he's mentioning Wu Chang Fallen Feathers, that's my number four, but I kind of cheated and combined that with Phantom Blade Zero. Okay, fuck that, I have Phantom Blade Zero on my bucket list. Fuck, there's gotta be one or the other. Not one of them. Why? Well, yeah, it's hard to pick between both there. Along the same, similar lines of the same kind of game, right? And now it's like, I wish I chose Phantom Blade as my number three. The sly. Hey, I was kind of hinting at it before we get to your chord, man. So. I gotta put it on a facial Wu -Chang Fallen Feathers then. Fuck it. Okay. There you go. Yeah. Why not? There you go. Why not? I don't appreciate it. Yeah. I mean, I guess I've always I like the aesthetic. I mean, it's kind of the games we both had to play. There are Souls inspired games and Also, it's the aesthetic of sort of mythical Japan, right? I mean, even, even, even. I will say Phantom Blade Zero slightly above Wu Chang for me. Okay. Just cause I like the aesthetic of their samurai better. Yeah. Fair enough. I was like, okay, this feels more like blood -borne samurai. Yeah. I'm curious about both and looking forward to either. What was that other one? Yeah, there's one more wasn't there a state of play one. Yeah It was like a long it was like when the wind falls from that long lines of that. Yeah, because that one is more, it's not Dark Soulsy. It's actually more like Ninja Gaiden. DMC? OK. Yeah. Yeah, if you ever watched the gameplay for it, it's a lot quicker. It's a rabbit actually. OK. But yeah for me it's phantom blade zero then where the winds For winds meet where winds meet yeah, cuz that that one I like cuz because of the samurai with the little baby on his back.
